HOW DO WE SEE MENTAL HEALTH DESIGN IN THE FUTURE?

How do we see mental health design in the future? Reflecting back on past principles, Peter Timmins – Director of HSPC Health Architects explains the different models of mental health, with criticisms as well as positive aspects helping shape a better design for acute mental health care. “An example sketch shows the crucifix model with the external placed courtyards creating the need for high walls, adding a layer of unpleasant security. Incorporating courtyards internally with bedrooms around the perimeter creates integrated security and can help reduce the stigma of mental health facilities, while affording privacy to clients, and supervision by staff, without overt presence. Scandinavian models go further by placing the facility in large open expanses like forest settings (nature has a healing influence), using securely glazed large picture windows to draw on the natural surroundings.”
