HSPC Health Architects appointed to lead next stage of Cabrini Malvern redevelopment
HSPC Health Architects is pleased to announce our appointment to lead the next stage of Cabrini HEALTH’s Malvern Hospital redevelopment, a landmark project within Cabrini’s visionary ‘Next Era’ strategy.

HSPC Health Architects has been appointed to deliver the next stage of Cabrini Health’s redevelopment of its Malvern hospital in collaboration with Studio Kristen Whittle. The project will be a major milestone in Cabrini’s ‘Next Era’ redevelopment pipeline – and forms part of HSPC’s long term masterplan for Cabrini – building on an existing strong and successful partnership with the not-for-profit private health service.
This next stage of redevelopment will help Cabrini expand its services to meet the growing healthcare needs of the community it serves. In responding to increasing demand for specialised care - particularly in cancer, cardiac, orthopaedic and palliative care, the architectural strategy focuses on revitalising, restoring, and expanding the hospital through increasing private accommodation, modernising facilities, and enhancing the overall patient experience via intuitive way finding, improved access and thoughtful design interventions supporting world-class care and clinical research.
Expanding Cabrini's capacity and clinical capabilities, delivering future-proofed infrastructure, and reimagining the patient experience is a is a challenge the team look forward to tackling. The team share with the Cabrini board and executive a bold vision for the future of the Malvern site, which will be executed using a carefully staged approach, minimising disruption while prioritising patient safety, ultimately delivering exceptional healing environments and optimised clinical efficiency to further Cabrini's industry leading standing.
Louise Alexander, Cabrini’s Executive Director - Malvern, said "Cabrini’s ‘Next Era’ redevelopment is crucial to meeting projected needs for increased cardiac, orthopaedic and cancer care in Melbourne. “As a steward of the local community, it’s important that we build for healthcare needs well into the future. We chose HSPC and Kristen Whittle because they share in our vision for a modern space where we can deliver the highest quality, compassionate care. The team has put patient experience at the centre of design and I’m excited by what this expansion will enable for Cabrini and our patients."
HSPC Principal Stephen Sinclair, said he is honoured to continue the partnership with Cabrini Health through the next transformative stage of its Malvern redevelopment. “This is an incredible opportunity to shape a facility that sets new benchmarks in healthcare design — one that expands on Cabrini’s legacy of developing buildings of significant architectural merit, which respond to the evolving healthcare needs of the community, and reflect Cabrini’s deep commitment to compassion, innovation, and clinical excellence. In collaboration with Studio Kristen Whittle, we’re excited to help realise a vision for a healthcare environment that will deliver an exceptional experience for all who come into its care for generations to come.”
Kristen Whittle, Director at Studio Kristen Whittle, said “We believe that health buildings provide designers with the most important role in architecture, that of looking after people in their moment of greatest need. In the most recent era through the Gandel Wing Redevelopment, Cabrini Health has reiterated its sincere commitments to providing exemplary design outcomes for its health facilities. We are thrilled to be collaborating with HSPC and utilising our regenerative design expertise for this new phase of development that will consolidate Cabrini Malvern into a larger and better organised civic campus that will help embolden Cabrini’s leadership in health care in Melbourne and proudly serve the community long into the future.”
The teams will now collaborate on designs ahead of Cabrini’s next community consultation and town planning submission in the coming months.
